THE EARTH′S RIVERS AND RIVERWAYS
The Missouri River Tributaries

The Gallatin River Go Down go back
The Gallatin river is a tributary of the Missouri River, in the U.S. states of Wyoming and Montana. It is one of three rivers, along with the Jefferson and Madison, that converge near Three Forks, Montana, and which together, form the Missouri River.
High up in the Rocky Mountains within the northwest corner of Yellowstone National Park in northwestern Wyoming, there is a small tarn called Lake Gallatin. Snow melt fills this tarn which over flows into the Gallatin river which together with it′s several tributaries flows northwest through Gallatin National Forest, past Big Sky, Montana, and joins the Jefferson and Madison approximately 30 miles northwest of Bozeman, Montana. The US 191 follows the river from the Wyoming border to Four Corners, Montana where US 191 turns east to Bozeman.
The Gallatin river, the eastern most fork at Three Forks was named by Meriwether Lewis while he camped on the banks of the river during July 1805. It is named for the standing U.S. Treasury Secretary, Albert Gallatin, who served in such capacity from 1801-1814. The western most fork was named for President Thomas Jefferson and the central fork was named for James Madison, the Secretary of State.
The Gallatin river is very scenic river, winding through high alpine meadows, dropping into the rock wall Gallatin canyon and then flowing out into the Gallatin valley.
Much of the Gallatin river is an exceptionally popular fly fishing destination as well as a white water rafting destination.
Parts of the movie, A River Runs Through It was filmed on the Gallatin.

The 2018 Journey, Gallatin River Go Down Go Up
(Day 725 TG) 50°F. 6:00 am, sunny
Upon leaving Toston, Montana, I travel south only anther twenty miles and reach the end of the Missouri river at Three Forks, Montana, or as it is known, the source of the Missouri. However, at the small state park where Lewis and Clark camped during 1805, there are three other rivers that feed the Missouri river. These three rivers are the Gallatin, the Madison and the Jefferson rivers.
