Include: Betalains, Chlorophyll, Indoles, Organosulfides, Phenols, Terpenes, Triterpenes
Phytonutrients come in groups. These groups include: Carotenoids, Curcuminoids, Flavonoids, Glucosinolates, Hydroxycinnamic acids, Lignans, Lipids, Stilbenes, Sulfides, and Tocopherol
Phytonutrients Facts
Phytonutrients, also called phytochemicals, are chemicals produced by plants. Plants use phytonutrients to stay healthy. For example, some phytonutrients protect plants from insect attacks, while others protect against radiation from UV rays.
Phytonutrients can also provide significant benefits for humans who eat plant foods. Phytonutrient-rich foods include colorful fruits and vegetables, legumes, nuts, tea, whole grains and many spices. They affect human health but are not considered nutrients that are essential for life, like carbohydrates, protein, fats, vitamins and minerals.
Among the benefits of phytonutrients are antioxidant and anti-inflammatory activities. Phytonutrients may also enhance immunity and intercellular communication, repair DNA damage from exposure to toxins, detoxify carcinogens and alter estrogen metabolism. The U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) notes that consuming a phytonutrient-rich diet seems to be an “effective strategy” for reducing cancer and heart disease risks.
Most Notable Phytonutrients
There are more than 25,000 phytonutrients, but of all of the many discovered, only six stand out as exceptional.
Carotenoids
There are over 600 types of this phytonutrient that exist, and which occur in plants with yellow, orange and red pigment. Common carotenoids include: alpha-carotene, beta-carotene, beta-cryptoxanthin, lutein, zeaxanthin and lycopene, and are associated with eye health, immune system, cardiovascular health and reduced risk of cancer.
Carotenoids can be found in bell peppers, cantaloupe, carrots, kale, mangos, oranges, papaya, sweet potatoes, spinach, tomatoes, watermelon, and yams, fruits and vegetables. However, in order to be properly absorbed, carotenoids should be consumed with a fat.
Curcumin
The primary food where this phytonutrient is found is in turmeric, which is a member of the ginger family. Curcumin gives turmeric its yellow color and this phytonutrient has been used for centuries as a medicinal plant in places like India.
The claimed effects of curcumin range from relieving flatulence to curing Alzheimer′s disease and cancer. Curcumin is also effective as an anti-inflammatory and antioxidant. Too, it many help rid the body of toxins, aid in combating cancer cell growth and tumors, help decrease rheumatoid arthritis, cystic fibrosis, provide cardiovascular protection
Ellagic Acid
This phytonutrient is also called a tannin and is associated with antioxidant, anti-inflammatory and anti-cancer activity, as well as reducing blood pressure and removing arterial plaque.
It is found in blackberries, cranberries, pomegranates, raspberries, red grapes, strawberries and walnuts. It can also be produced during a process in the body of breaking down larger phytonutrients called ellagitannins. It is absorbed rapidly.
This phytonutrient may also enhances detoxing enzymes in the liver while also inhibiting liver enzymes that encourage metabolism, which cause carcinogens to be removed before they can be metabolized. It may also improve glucose metabolism, by blocking the intestinal enzyme alpha-glucosidase, which triggers glucose absorption. All this means, less glucose in the blood stream and a benefit for diabetics and hyperglycemics.
Flavonoids
These are a very large group of phytonutrients and are fairly well known. This phytonutrient quercetin and kaempferol.
There are several significant subgroups of flavonoids, including flavones, anthocyanins, flavonones, isoflavones, flavonols and flavanols.
Foods include: apples, berries, broccoli, buckwheat, cabbage, carrots, chocolate, coffee, ginger, grapefruit, kale, leeks, legumes, lemons, onions, parsley, red grapes, red wine, tea, tomatoes and more.
Flavonoids are associated with longevity and reduced risk of cardiovascular disease and cancer.
Lignans
These phytonutrients are similar to estrogen, are associated with preventing hormone related cancers.
Research has shown that lignans are associated with preventing hormone related cancers.
Like all phytonutrients, lignans are found in fruits and vegetables, especially kale, broccoli, apricots and strawberries.
Also, this phytonutrient is found in grains and seeds such as flaxseeds, poppy seed, sesame seeds, as well as oat bran and rye.
Resveratrol
This phytonutrient can be found in large concentrations in red wine and grape seed extract, is found also in blueberries, cocoa, cranberries and others. This phytonutrient has the ability to reduce heart disease through antioxidant and anti-inflammatory activities.
Resveratrol has shown to improve insulin sensitivity and glucose tolerance, thus is being considered for diabetes treatment.
