THE RIO GRANDE TRIBUTARIES
The Conejos River

The Conejos River Go Down go back
The Conejos River is a tributary of the Rio Grande, about 93 miles, located in the south central area of Colorado. The river flows down from a scenic portion of the eastern San Juan Mountains west of the San Luis Valley.

The Conejos River rises from snow melt along the continental divide just west of Conejos Peak (13,179 feet), where the Conejos river divides into three forks; Adams Fork, North Fork, and Middle Fork. These forks all merge and flow into the Platoro Reservoir. Further down the Conejos River, north of Black Mountain, the South Fork which rises from the South side of Conejos Peak merges into the Conejos and travels through Conejos Canyon collecting water from many creeks.
The Conejos continues in a southerly direction just to the west of Black Mountain along Forest Service Road 250, then turns west to cross under SR 17.
The combined waters then continue southwest and continues along side state highway 17 and both travel down the valley, crossing several times until the Conejos crosses under to the north side of SH 17 and flows to the north of Antonio, Colorado, crosses under US 285 and continues northward across a relatively flat farming area where is is mostly diverted for irrigation.
Finally the Conejos continues to the north side of Siero Del Ojito and thereafter travels eastward to merge with the Rio Grande River.
