THE EARTH′S RIVERS AND RIVERWAYS
The Texas Rivers

The Texas Rivers Go Down go back
Texas River Information:
According to the US Geological Survey Geographic Names Information System, there are 11,247 named Texas waterways, with a combined length of about 80,000 miles and which drain 263,513 square miles within Texas
Listing Conventions:
Major Texas River: Thie following is the description as I have learned from my years in Texas schools.
A major Texas river (M) is a primary Texas river (P) which is 200 miles long or more. All major Texas rivers must have its mouth (MOU:) in Texas on the Gulf of Mexico and/or an inland bay of the Gulf. However, its source (SOU:) can be outside of Texas. Each of the Major Texas rivers will have the following specifications in their description below: M, P, MOU: GOM.
There are eight Texas rivers that meet this criteria to be considered a Major Texas River, which include starting from the southernmost cost of Texas: (1) Rio Grande River 1986 miles; (2) Nueces River 315 miles; (3) Guadalupe River 230 m; (4) Colorado River 862 m; (5) Brazos River 1280 m; (6) Trinity River 710 m; (7) Neches River 426 m; (8) Sabine River 510 m.
Primary Texas Rivers: A primary River is one that is not a tributary of another river and has its mouth in a Bay or Lake along the coast of the state of Texas. There is no length restrictions on being designated as a primary river.
Secondary Texas Rivers: also called a Tributary (T) of a primary, are those rivers that have its mouth located within the state of Texas. There are no other restriction for being designated a secondary Texas River. These will be shown indented below the primary Texas river.
The miles that are listed next to the name of a river is the length of the river from original headwaters (fork in the river, lake, or spring) to the outflow point (bay, gulf, ocean or primary river.)
If any river flows through Texas but has its outlet (also know as mouth) and/or source outside of Texas, that river listing will indicate what state the outlet and/or source are located within. For a list of abbreviations, see footnote. 1

Before the Iron Bridge Dam formed Lake Tawakoni, the South Fork, Cowleech Fork and Caddo Fork were considered the headwater for the Sabine River, which are all three now submerged under Lake Tawakoni. Now, the outlet of Lake Tawakonin is said to be the headwaters for the Sabine Lake.
