Numerous in the far north, both coastal Alaska and coastal Atlantic. Nests in Alaska coast lands and most all of Canadian coast lands. Winters well offshore as far south as Delaware.

Elders dive for mollusks in frigid ocean water.

Sloping forehead, long bill, shield extend almost to eyes. Males are black and white with green ting on nap. Western form has orange-yellow bill and shield and thin black V on throat. Females are rusty brown with barred back and flanks. Immature males have white splotches on neck and back.

Once coffeed up, I continue east on US highway 1 until arriving at West Gouldsboro and here take state highway 186 south to Winter Harbor then right onto the park road to the Schoodic Peninsula a separate unit of Acadia National Park.
