Pinophyta, also known as Pinopsida, are conifers, which are a group of cone-bearing seed plants, a class of gymnosperms. All extant conifers are perennial woody plants with secondary growth. The great majority of species are trees, though a few are shrubs. Examples of conifers include cedars, Douglas-firs, cypresses, firs, junipers, kauri, larches, pines, hemlocks, redwoods, spruces, and yews.
Scientifically, they make up the division Pinophyta, (alternately known as Coniferophyta or Coniferae.) This division contains a single extant Class, Pinopsida, with four Orders, eight Families and 60 - 65 Genera and more than 650 living species.
