The Wyoming Basin Ecoregion in Utah is only a small area of the total area of this ecoregion, but like this ecoregion in Wyoming, it is a broad intermontane basin covered by arid grasslands and shrublands throughout its rolling plains, high hills, mesas, and low mountains.
This ecoregion is somewhat drier than the Northwestern Great Plains (9D) to the northeast, does not have the vast pinyon-juniper woodland within the Colorado Plateaus (7I) to the south, and lacks the extensive forests of the neighboring Middle Rockies (6G) (within the Wasatch and Uinta Mountains), and Southern Rockies (6J).
Much of the ecoregion is used for livestock grazing, although many areas lack sufficient vegetation to adequately support this activity in the long term. Ecoregion 18 also contains major oil and natural gas fields.
