The Geological Wonders: Hot Springs & Geysers Go Down Go Back
Montezuma Hot Spring, New Mexico
This hot springs is one of the nicest I have seen, especially since there is no fee to enjoy the hot water.
In the Shadow of a Castle
The Montezuma hot springs are located on the property of the United World College that also has its campus in the castle like structure atop the above hill. The hot springs are open from 5 am to midnight each day and are free to the public. There are posted rules on site.

The hot springs is located right next to SH 65 in the town of Montezuma, New Mexico five miles northwest of the city of Las Vegas, New Mexico.
The walk from the highway (parking area) is only about twenty to thirty feet down a slight incline which include steps, which makes all three hot springs locations not ADA compatible. However, the walk was no problem whatsoever for me.

The 2019 Journey, Montezuma Hot Springs Go Down Go Up
(Day 237 TG) 35°F. 7:00 am, sunny
Awake, walk inside the w-mart to buy coffee and to check com, and then by ten this morning leave to drive to a hot springs for a soak. I take I25 north to Las Vegas, NM, then SH 65 to Montezuma, NM and when I set the large building that looks like a castle on the hilltop, I find the hot spring on the side of the highway.

I arrive at the Montezuma hot springs just after noon, walk down the short walk to look at the location and decide that I want to get in. I walk back to the jammer, change into my swim suit and then head back for the hot water.

The source pool is a concrete tub with overflows into lower concrete pools. I estimate that the source tub is about 114 degrees because I can only stay in that water for about one minute before I must get out.

The next pool is cooler, possibly 105 degrees and is conducive to soaking for longer time. I spend a longer time in this pool.

After getting my fill of hot water, I see a trail that leads downstream along the Gallinas creek, so I done my sandals and begin walking along the trail. Immediately, I find out that due to the very muddy path, it would have been better to walk up to the road and then down to the additional hot springs.

Exploring the hillside along the highway, I find two more locations where concrete has been used to create hot spring pools. The first one is a closed vault over the source with a pipe to another concrete vault with two holes cut into the top.
This location is also just a short walk down from the highway to the pool.

Upon arriving here, I ask the two people here how deep the vault is and the woman tells me it is up to her neck, about five feet. I then choose not to get into this vault because I might not be able to climb out, so instead, I just put my feet in the hot water and splash my self.
I estimate that the water in the vault, well, at least where I had my feet is 106-107 degrees.
Then I leave to see the third hot springs, only one hundred feet away and near to the old bath house that was built for this hot springs.

I do not get in at the third hot springs pools either, but sit and talk with the man who has been traveling afoot for about three years. He had recently adopted a rescue dog.
