The Red-tailed Hawk Go Down Go Up
Order: Accipitriformes, Family: Acipitridae
Genus: Buteo, Species: Jamaicensis, L 22 inches, W 50 inches

Range
Seen in the across the US all year. However, during summer and nesting season, they will also be seen in most of the northern areas of the continent but not in the Tundra and Boreal northernmost areas.

Habitat
Numerous, widespread in open, perch-studded habitats. Has increase with forest fragmentations and prairie planting. Often seen hunting rodents from a perch but is adaptable to use hovering.

Description
Adults soar with rounded wings, often angled forward at wrists and bulging outer secondaries.
The Red-tailed hawk has several races with both Dark and Pale forms. The most widespread form is common in the east has a red tail that has dark band just above the end of the tail, a white chest with dark streaking on the belly, white molting on mantle.
Western hawks have darker above with tawny mottling and under parts.

Back Deck Rail-sitter Hawk
After hearing bird call that I did not recognize, I walk outside and find this red-tailed hawk sitting on my back deck railing.
