The Bonita Canyon Campground, Chiricahua NM, Arizona

The Campsite Go Down
Chiricahua National Monument
The campground is located from Wilcox, Arizona. Drive 32 miles east on SH 186 to SH 181, turn left and drive 4 miles to the Chiricahua entrance station.
Gas Up in Wilcox, Arizona, as this site is close to the Mexican border and is a round trip of nearly one hundred miles.
Information:
Called by the Apaches Chiricahua, (Land of Standing Up Rocks), this national monument was established on April 18, 1924 to protect the extensive hoodoos, balancing rocks and other strange rock formations which have resulted from the eroding of volcanic pinnacles.
The formations are the remains of an immense volcanic eruption that shook the region about 27 million years ago. The thick white-hot ash spewed forth from the nearby Turkey Creek Caldera, cooled and hardened into rhyolitic tuff, laying down almost two thousand feet of dark volcanic ash and pumice, which is highly siliceous in nature, but over the millennia eventually eroded into the natural features that we see today at the monument.

Coordinates: 32.011456, -109.355384
Elevation: 5344 feet
Geographical Region: Basin and Range
