The CAMPSITES RATED FOUR
The Lake Owyhee State Park, Oregon

The Campsite
Lake Owyhee State Park Campground
Lake Owyhee State Park is a remote oasis on the eastern edge of Oregon that offers camping and boating on the shore of a scenic desert canyon reservoir. The park contains two campgrounds: McCormack Campground and Indian Creek Campground. Both are along Owyhee Reservoir, a 53-mile-long lake that fills a narrow, deep canyon brimming with colorful volcanic rock formations.
Owyhee: sounds like Hawaii
In his account of an 1826 expedition, famed trapper Peter Skene Ogden says that the Owyhee River was named in memory of two Hawaiians killed on an earlier trip to the area. The word Owyhee was a variation of Hawaii commonly used in the early 19th century.
Location:
The campground is located about forty miles south on SH 201 from Ontario, Oregon. The state highway follows the Owyhee River upstream to the dam, then climbs up along the canyon wall to the top of the day where it circles the lake for another mile before arriving at the campsite.
