Debsconeag Lakes Wilderness Area, which area contains the highest concentration of pristine, remote ponds in New England, thousands of acres of mature forests, hundreds of miles of hiking trails and numerous camping sites. Nestled in the shadow of Katahdin and south of Baxter State Park, the DLWA is a vital link in nearly 500,000 acres of contiguous conservation land. Debsconeag, in the language of the Abenaki people means carrying place for the portage sites where they carried birch bark canoes around rapids and waterfalls.
