The SIXES
The Eight Holer Campground, Maine

The Campsite
Eight Holer Campground
The campsite site is located directly outside of Baxter State Park on the West Branch of the Penobscot River just downstream of Abol Bridge Campground. Cross the Abol bridge to the west side and take the first dirt road south to the campsite which is adjacent to the river.
May Have Been Removed
However, when looking recently to add the coordinates, I have found that this campsite must have been discontinued, possibly removed or abandoned back to the forest.
Nevertheless, I will keep this record of this grand old campsite that, during my Journey On, I was to come across and able to spend a few days camping alongside the Penobscot River.

The Amenities
Onsite:
Located on the West Branch of the Penodbscot River just downstream of Abol Bridge Campground.

Nearby:
The Appalachian Trail traverses this densely forested 46,271 acre preserve.
Baxter State Park
Debsconeag Lakes Wilderness Area, which area contains the highest concentration of pristine, remote ponds in New England, thousands of acres of mature forests, hundreds of miles of hiking trails and numerous camping sites. Nestled in the shadow of Katahdin and south of Baxter State Park, the DLWA is a vital link in nearly 500,000 acres of contiguous conservation land. Debsconeag, in the language of the Abenaki people means carrying place for the portage sites where they carried birch bark canoes around rapids and waterfalls.

The Camping
General Information:
Because it is a popular location to camp, arrive early as this site is a favorite for many of the local Mainiacs and it is often occupied early in the day.

Fees:
$8.00 per night

Campground Includes:
The site has a place to park, a fire ring, picnic table and wooden bench.
There are no hookups, and the only water available is river water. There is plenty of fire wood in the forest nearby.
