The campground is located at the southwestern edge of Lockhart, Texas and is administered by the Texas Parks and Wildlife Department. The park was constructed by Civilian Conservation Corps Company 3803 from 1935 to 1938 and opened in 1948.

Activities include picnicking, camping, fishing, hiking, nature study, swimming pool and a nine-hole golf course (the only staff-operated course in the Texas State Park System). The park offers a variety of educational opportunities.

Nearby attractions include Palmetto State Park, Bastrop State Park, Buescher State Park and Monument Hill/Kreische Brewery State Historic Sites.

All campsites have a fire ring, upright grill, picnic table, electric-water hookups and a restroom with shower nearby.
