The Yaquina Bay Light was built in 1871, soon after the founding of the city of Newport, Oregon, located on the north side of Yaquina Bay. In 1871-1874, it was the busiest and most populated of the many coastal ports between Washington and California.
This Light was active for only three years due to the establishment of the larger Yaquina Head Light in 1873 which was just three miles north of the Bay Light.
In 1974, the Light was transferred to the ownership of Oregon Parks and Recreation Department and a state park was built. On 07 December 1996, James A. Gibbs loaned the Light a 9.8 inch modern optic and the Light was re-lit.
