The Procyonids Go Down Go Up
The Raccoon Family
The procyonidae is a new world family of the order Carnivora and includes the raccons, ringtails, cacomistles, coatis, kinkajou, olingos and olinguitos. Procyonids inhabit a range of habitats and are generally omnivorous.
This family is a relatively small animals with slender bodies and long tails, except that raccoon are slightly more bulky.
Maybe it is due to their omnivorous diet that procyonids have lost some of the adaptations for flesh eating found in other member of the order carnivora. However, procyonide do have carnassial teeth but they are often poorly developed in most species.
The Procyonidae family has six genera with fourteen species.
