The Cantilever Bridges,
Deception Pass Bridge, Washington
|
|
|
The Deception Pass Bridge is one of the most important manmade structure built, well, at least in northern Puget Sound. It began as a dream of many who lived in the area of the north Puget Sound waters, but especially of those who lived on Whidbey Island, which at the time had auto passage onto the island only by ferry boat.
On July 31, 1935, the day it was dedicated, some 700 cars traveled across the bridge 180 feet above its swirling tidal water. Construction had began during August 1934 by the CCC public works project and after it was completed one year later by the end of July 1935. Shortly after, the US Navy moved onto the island and built Whidbey Island Naval Air Station. In time, Deception Pass Bridge became a convenience with over 20,000 cars now crossing the bridge every single day. However, later, it was to develop into a northwest must see Icon.
Leaving Fidalgo Island, crossing the top of Pass Island and continuing on to Whidbey Island, Deception Pass Bridge crowns the most visited state park in Washington and possibly one of the top ten most visited state parks in the country, which state park is
Deception Pass State Park.
Information:
Two Bridges, Not One

The 2023 Journey,
Deception Pass Bridge

Unlike most previous annual first time crossings of this bridge, this years I crossed from the south side while driving north. The reason for crossing this direction is that I came onto Whidbey Island from Port Townsend on an auto-ferry.

Journey On, Day 52
Day Seven in the Rain Shadow
Awake, dress in my fall blues, start the jammer engine and drive to
Deception Pass state park, cross the
Deception Pass bridge and then drive to Bowman Bay for a hot shower at the campground. Like it was last year, I find the shower house is still available and access to the state park is available to anyone with a Discover Pass. I walk inside, get into the hot water and enjoy the shower.

Day Thirty-five in the Rain Shadow
Awake, drive to the w-mart for coffee, com and to begin pounding keys. However, I am expecting a call from Frank and Jesica who are from Harlingen to call me. When they do call, I will then drive to the state park to meet them and spend time with Frank, his family and their extended family who live here in Washington. I will then be with them while they enjoy the natural beauty in the Deception Pass area. At eleven, I decide to drive to the pass and wait there. When I arrive in the park, I go across the bridge to Bowman Bay to take a shower and put on clean clothes.
Then, I continue to wait for the call, until about one this afternoon when he calls to tell me that they are at North Beach. I drive back across the bridge, into the park and then north on the road which leads to North Beach. The ranger at the entrance station says that the parking area at North Beach is full but I drive there anyway praying for there to be an open space. When approaching the parking lot, I see three cars leaving and I thank God for answering my prayer. I arrive and drive into and find that there is one space open, which I pull the jammer into. I then call Frank and he walks up from the beach to guide me back to where his party is sitting. Also, my sister Susan calls me to tell me that Barry, my brother has lost his wife to COVID.

The Canoe Pass Bridge
If one of the two bridges is the least photographed, it is the Canoe Pass Bridge because access to a good view of the northern most bridge of the two is limited. The easiest access to photograph this bridge is at West Point within Deception Pass state park and parking at the West Beach parking lot in the northernmost parking spaces provide the least amount of walking to obtain a view of the Canoe Pass bridge. However, the bridge from this location is at quite a distance away.

The other view point requires nearly a two miles round trip walk from Bowman Bay parking lot to Lottie Point, however, this is by far the best location for a photograph of the Canoe Pass Bridge.
This next photo was taken in 2005 during the visit of my two brothers when I took them to see the bridge from this location. The grain is really terrible and because of this, I just know that I will have to go back to Lottie Point someday soon to get some better photographs of the Canoe Pass Bridge.

Deception Pass Bridge
The largest of the two bridges is the Deception Pass bridge and, methinks, the most photographed.
