Journey On, Day 45
Day 28 in the Path of Totality
Eclipse Countdown: 12 days
Overnighting in a parking lot
Awake, start the jammer and drive out of Sulphur Spring, first east on SH 11 until it comes to SH 19 at which junction I turn south on SH 19 and drive south to Emory where just after I pass through I turn right on SH FM 2324 and drive west until this road arrives at SH FM 47. 1 So, I turn left onto FR 47 and drive along the Lake Tawakoni earthen dam until I arrive at the spillway. Crossing the bridge over the river makes me wonder what river this is, so, I pull into the parking lot located just past the river bridge and then open Google Maps on my phone. I find out that the waterway coming out of the dam is the Sabine River and that Lake Tawakoni at the Iron Bridge Dam is the source of the
Sabine River.
Before the dam was built in 1960, the source of the Sabine river was the South Fork, Cowleech Fork, and Caddo Forks; that all were the headwaters of the Sabine River, however, now all three rivers are submerged under the lake waters and the outlet of the Iron Bridge Dam now serves as the headwaters of the Sabine. After crossing the Sabine River, I drive to the Lake Tawakoni State Park, get a day pass from the headquarters at the entrance and drive directly to the first shower house available. After the hot shower, I then check out some of the other amenities of the state park before leaving.
