Description
Length:
9 to 11 inches
Wingspan:

Male: Red breast and under parts. Black head with white split eye rings.
Black neck with vertical white bars. Yellow bill.
Dark gray back, wings and tail. White rump.
Female: browner above and duller below.
Juvenile: heavily spotted with dusky-colored bill.
First Year: not easily distinguishable from adults, but duller.
Habitat
Numerous in backyards and common in moist woodlands. Can be shy.
Often perches atop a tall tree and sings repeated three word song.
Range
Year-round: Continentally widespread.
Breeding: Northernmost areas of North America from the US-Canada border
west to include nearly all of
Alaska and east throughout the
Canadian Shield.
Wintering: Southeast California
Basin and Range, All of
Baja California.
South Texas
Coastal Plains, West Texas
Great Plains and mountains.
Southeast Georgia
