State Roadpath Description:
The NTR in Wisconsin crosses from Duluth, Minnesota over the Saint Louis River into Superior, Wisconsin on the Richard Bong Memorial Bridge (US 2) and continues east across Superior. Then, at the junction of US 2 and US 53 the NTR turn right and follows the combined highways of US 2 and US 53 southeast for the distance of abound 6.4 miles to exit 227 for State Highway 13, (Port Wing and Bayfield). Take exit 227, turn left onto SH 13 and continue east on the Wisconsin, Lake Superior Scenic Byway for 71 miles to Bayfield, Wisconsin, during which there will be several adjacent road paths to visit and/or view several of the park unit locations of the Apostle Islands National Park. Also, in Bayfield, there is a ferry dock at 20 Washington Avenue where both auto and pasenger passage to Madeline Island can be acquired.
From Bayfield, the NTR continues southward on SH 13 along the east coast of the Bayfield Peninsula, through Washburn, Wisconsin and connects back with US 2 after another 20 miles (total SH 13 miles - 91). Upon arriving back at US 2, enter the circle and take the US 2 Eastbound exit. Continue east on US 2 through Asland
An alternative route for the NTR that bypasses the Bayfield Peninsula and instead remains on US highway 2 in Wisconsin is to continue southeast on the combined highways US 2 and US 53 for about 11 miles to where US 2 departs and travels eastward from US 53. Then, continue to drive east on US 2 through the towns of Popular, Iron River, Ashland to Ironwood on the Wisconsin-Michigan state line.
